Temple Sowerby Medical Practice

Located in the Eden Valley in Cumbria, the combination of a doctor’s local knowledge and Prime’s healthcare and development expertise saw the successful replacement of an outdated surgery, delivering a modern, purpose-built facility to offer increased services and improved accessibility for patients and staff.

Based in a traditional stone cottage, the existing surgery was picturesque but unable to cope with the needs of a busy rural practice serving a wide catchment area. Having discounted the possibility of converting a neighbouring stone barn, Prime worked with the local community and the planning authority to secure a site that would offer the space and flexibility to deliver modern primary care.

The resulting surgery is a contemporary interpretation of a typical Cumbrian barn, with a fully glazed entrance offering a light, open and welcoming space for visiting patients. The new facility allows the practice to work more efficiently as a team and to offer services it was previously unable to provide, including chiropody, phlebotomy and a dispensary. The building also houses drug therapy and counselling sessions, while providing increased meeting room space for staff and a base for health visitors.

We’ve taken on a healthcare assistant. The building houses drug therapy and counselling sessions. We’ve even done Tai Chi classes upstairs!”
