Completing a twenty-year vision to create a legacy of care for a tight-knit Scottish community
Prime’s extensive experience of delivering meticulously planned, multi-purpose spaces, helped transform Nairn’s Town and Community hospital into one of Scotland’s most comprehensive and distinctive multi-service facilities.
With fears that this community hospital offering vital, locally-based health services would be lost, Prime helped to secure its future by delivering a transformative £12m community-based, integrated health and social care facility.
As part of the local fabric, Nairn Community Hospital had faithfully served the local population for over a century – but long before its centenary its future already looked bleak. Unable to meet the standards of a modern health service, spiralling maintenance costs, poor heating and ventilation, along with inadequate access for less mobile patients led to real concerns that this local service could gradually be lost.
Despite approving a business case for a redevelopment of the hospital, the local NHS Health Board deemed the project unaffordable. Utilising Prime’s support to calculate the cost of not taking action, a collective of local health professionals, including three GP practices, continued in their pursuit of a viable solution.
With Prime’s proven track record of planning and delivering exceptional health and care spaces, we were selected as the preferred developer, to achieve the vision of a bigger, better and more holistic hospital. Prime made the delivery of new facilities possible by investing in the scheme to design, build and lease the facilities back to the Trust.
Delivered over three phases, this state-of-the-art project brings together 250 staff in a 5,500 sqm building designed to meet the needs of over 14,000 patients. The result is a flagship development, offering one of the most integrated facilities in the country. It unites a wide range of NHS services together with social work, local medical practices, a dental practice with expanded provision and community hospital services.
From the outset, our experienced team utilised their communication and engagement skills to involve and inform the public, who held genuine affection for this characterful site. With a commitment to preserving the character of the original stone-clad building, Prime carefully managed the design and delivery of this complex development to deliver a high-quality space, that improves access and functionality while remaining sympathetic to its environment.
With Prime’s help, the integration and modernisation of all services have helped the local health professionals achieve their vision of enhancing the patient and staff experience, while securing the future of their community health services.
People take pride in their workplace, it shows in their body language and demeanour, and that enhances the patient experience. The acoustics are excellent and we’ve got quiet spaces near the reception and waiting areas where we can talk to patients in complete privacy.”
