A new 2,067sqm primary care centre has been constructed for the Health Service Executive (HSE) as one of 14 new centres across Ireland - and one of three in County Mayo alone.
The two-storey building uses a variety of materials to create a crisp modern look, while the layout provides flexibility for the future and a design that can evolve to meet changing patient demographics and clinical need.
The new centre provides a wide range of community-based services, such as general practice, dentistry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and public health nursing.
After the HSE had taken the project through design and planning, it appointed Prime to review the plans to ensure best value, innovation, quality and future proofing. Applying its expertise in healthcare property development, Prime suggested a number of adjustments including improved room adjacencies and additional facilities, plus planned use of a GP suite expansion area.
Clinical and administrative rooms have been relocated, grouping them together to improve operational efficiency. Simple design changes, such as the addition of half-height walls to divide waiting areas, keep the area light but aid wayfinding and improve visibility.
Improvements outside the building – such as wider car parking spaces – have also been made, improving accessibility and the overall patient, visitor and staff experience.
The new primary care centre in Ballinrobe was built by JJ Rhatigan on behalf of Balfour Beatty Ireland.
The construction of these state of the art primary care centres, strategically located throughout our region, will provide us with the much needed infrastructure to deliver primary care services that will match the very best available across Europe to the people of the west of Ireland.”
Tony Canavan, Chief Officer, HSE
